American Couples Series

Jay and Shari Holsapple Take Couples win on Kentucky Lake

It was one tough day on Kentucky Lake, May 20, 2018 for the ABA Couples Series. Seventeen very good teams worked hard to overcome the slow bite this day.  The water temperature was in the high 70s to low 80s.  The air temperature reached 90. The bass were in a cranky (no pun intended) mood.  They were in transition from the spawn to their summer pattern and the results were actually shocking.  This was not your typical late May bite for this great lake.  Of the seventeen boats, ten weighed in a total of only 14 bass for 45.01 pounds, all released alive and well to battle us another day.  We paid out four places for a total of $1,445, including big bass for both men and ladies.

Last year’s division champions, Jay and Shari Holsapple of Kevil, KY, took first place with just 2bass weighing 6.90 pounds.  Jay and Shari caught their fish using jigs on ledges mid-lake.  They only had three bites all day.  They took home a very hard earned $575.

Robert and Cindy Linton of Cadiz, KY finished a very close second place with two bass weighing 6.76 pounds.  Cindy had a 3.74 largemouth to anchor their catch.  I am not sure but I believe Cindy took home $350 for her two fish effort.  She did say Robert handled the net well.  She used creature baits on the ledges all day.  It was undetermined if she would share her winnings with Robert!

Greg and Debbie Warner of Murray, KY came in third with another 2 fish effort topping the scales at 5.9 pounds.  They caught their fish mid-lake using Hag’s Tornado F4 Baits on a Ned rig.  Debbie had a nice 4 pounder to anchor their bag. They were awarded $225 for the day’s work.

The Barclay’s, Eddie and Tammy of Wingo, KY finished fourth with, you guessed it, two bass weighing 5.53 pounds.  The Barclays went south of Paris to fish points and drops with creature baits.  They were rewarded $125 for their hard work.

The big fish were taken by teams with only one bass each.  Ladies’ big fish was the biggest fish of the day, a very nice5.24 pound largemouth, caught by Tammy Easley of Princeton, KY.  That bass had just spawned and was taken mid-lake in shallow water. Tammy earned $85 for her big fish

Men’s big fish was taken by Scott Vanover.  It was a chunk weighing in at 4.93 pounds.  Scott took home $85 for his catch.

As we always do, some prizes were awarded by drawing four teams that did not finish in the money.  They each received 100 count packs of soft plastic baits in the drawing.  We will be giving away much more in future tournaments, along with a great BBQ and hundreds of dollars of prizes at our last event at Big Bear.

Donna and I want to thank everyone for joining usin this trail.  We have a great group of competitors that are great sportsmen and friends.  Everyone seems to have a great time and willing to help each other, even when the fishing is as tough as it was this week.  Invite friends and family to join us.  If we can reach the point of having over 30 boats we will be paying nearly $1,000 for 1st place!

Our next tournament will be held on Kentucky Lake at the Paris Landing Ramp on June 3rd.  I would expect some20 pound limits from multiple teams at this tournament.  The fish should be settled into their legendary summer ledge pattern and ready to cooperate!  We will launch at 6:00 AM and weigh-in at 2:00 PM.  We will be at the ramp for boat check and late registrations at 5:00 AM.
