Amanda and Vince Smith Take the Victory on Lake Russell
A stormy week through Friday night cleared just in time for the South Carolina Couples Tournament pre-dawn safety meeting on Saturday, May 21st. All of the 25 teams weighed fish on what turned out to be a pleasant fishing day.
Amanda and Vince Smith from Westminster, South Carolina claimed first place honors with a five fish sack weighing 13.94 pounds. Their fish were caught shallow with topwater lures.
Krista and Deron Johnson from Anderson, South Carolina were very close behind with 5 fish weighing 13.88 pounds. Their fish were also caught shallow with spinnerbaits and swimbaits in 1 to 4 feet of water. Anchoring their super sack was Deron’s Men’s Big Bass at 4.4 pounds.
Third place went to Sheila Attaway and Grover Jones of Starr, South Carolina with a 13.5 pound limit. The shallow water pattern was working for Sheila and Grover, also. In this sack was Sheila’s 5.2 pound Lady’s and Tournament Big Bass. She admitted a healthy degree of discomfort when she first hooked the fish. Sheila said her first thought was, “Oh dear God, help me!” And, Grover also helped with his skills getting the uncooperative fish in the net.
Victoria and Dale Goff, from Lugoff, South Carolina, got fourth place with an 11.7 pound limit. Their fish were caught with lizards and brush hogs on humps, shoals and points.
Mary Ann and Craig Sahms of Taylors, South Carolina claimed fifth place with 10.9 pounds. Their success came with a variety of spinnerbaits, “spooks” and “flukes,” largely on points.
The Friday night social dinner at LaFogata’s restaurant was well attended. A fun time was also had by those that could attend an after-tournament social hosted by Mary Ann and Craig Sahms at the house they rented near the launch area.
Many continued thanks to the generous sponsors that contribute to the South Carolina Couples. A Costa gift pack was the first prize chosen in the drawing after the cash awards. A Cabela’s vacuum sealer was also quickly drawn. Mercury Optimax oil from Strickland Marine is always a hit, as are gifts from Yo-Zuri and Yeti. Gift packs of Weeble Lures, hand made jigs from Scotty Bartley, are clearly gaining popularity.
South Carolina’s next tournament is on Lake Greenwood on June 4. This end-of-season event will include awards for the South Carolina Division’s Anglers of the Year and the Lady’s and Men’s Big Bass of the Year. Lake Greenwood is known for its big bass. Bill Cain’s Lake Murray 8-pounder and Sheila Attaway’s Lake Russell 5-pounder will be challenged. Season’s Big Bass winners have a chance to win either a Kissel Krafts Custom Rod or an ALX Rod plus, each winner will receive a Lew’s reel.
